Our History

Teisha McAdams identified the need to create a transitional program to assist young adults, ages 18 to 21, who are now in the extended foster care system, more than ten years ago. Teisha McAdams previously fostered 3 children before becoming their adoptive mother. Being a former foster parent, Ms. McAdams knows the urgency and need for extended foster care to help the young adults aging out of care.

Ms. McAdams, a cornerstone of her community, opened Kreative 4 Kidz Childcare Center with the goal of assisting young mothers with childcare. She employees 10 local community workers on her payroll. She gives away 8 to 10 free spots to anyone in need of childcare assistance for a year. There has been recognition for Ms. McAdams' efforts to the community. In order to transform Ms. McAdams' Kreative 4 Kidz Childcare Center into a licensed preschool for underprivileged kids in her neighborhood, Baker Ripley and United Way have partnered with her.

Ms. McAdams continued to feel that young adults who are aging out of care needs assistance, so she contacted Lisa Houston, her former CPS Adoption Prep Caseworker, to find out more about the program's extended care options. The birth of Kreative Way Supervised Independent Living (Kreative Way SIL) was established at this point. Kreative Way SIL is committed to helping those who have been overlooked by the social welfare system by utilizing research-based ideas and techniques while working with local and state clients. These young adults have to abide by the rules in order to finish their high school education, go to college, get a trade school education, or keep a full-time job.

Kreative Way SIL is committed to providing services that help people advance their personal and professional development by utilizing the most recent research and cutting-edge teaching techniques. The program will teach participants how to develop their life, education, and career abilities in the best possible ways. This team is dedicated to using performance-based evaluation to track advancement. Young adults will be empowered by the program, which also offers a secure environment for them to pursue their academic goals.

In conclusion, Teisha McAdams is a true pillar of the community. Her selfless dedication to helping others has made Houston’s North side a better place to live, and her example serves as an inspiration to us all.

About Kreative Way SIL

Providing young adults, ages 18 to 21, with a secure place to live, assisting the young adult in acquiring the life skills required for independent living. The objective of the Kreative Way SIL program is to work with each participant to develop a Transitional Independent Living Plan (TILP). To help with the process of identifying and outlining the goals and objectives required to make the transition into maturity and housing before turning 21, the young adult and other supportive individuals—the judge, attorney ad litem, CPS caseworker, and CPS PAL worker—develop the TILP.  There will be space in the home for leisure activities, case manager meetings, therapy appointments, resume development, and job hunting. Kreative Way SIL is categorized as a shared household environment, meaning that a group of people live together as an unrelated family in a large house with one or more people sharing a bedroom.
